Corinthian Yacht Club of Edmonds

MAD DASH

The Mad Dash, a race that is truly a highlight for the club. The spirit of the race is that it is doublehanded, competitive, but also family‑friendly. All sailors are welcome! This is our traditional race focused on beginners and families, which is why flying sails and active crew beyond two are not allowed (see sailing instructions). You also don't have to be a member to race; non-members pay just $20 per boat to help cover the costs of the halfway party.

Saturday - the race begins on the north end of Edmonds. The start is not stressful because your start time is dependent on your rating; it is all about sailing and immersing yourself in the natural environment of the Salish Sea. The strategy you pick may be looking to take advantage of favorable current relief or a path with stronger winds. At the end of the first day, you cross the mouth of Hood Canal, pass the wooden dolphin off Port Ludlow, and sail in for good food and friends—perhaps music around the campfire.

Sunday - the journey back to Edmonds is a repeat of the first day, only in reverse. Usually feeling a bit more confident and connected to the boat, the choice may be to hug the west shore down to Point No Point, getting current relief from the ebb, or perhaps rolling the dice and crossing to the west side of Whidbey, skirting Skagit Head. The final leg crosses that big expanse south of Whidbey to the finish.

The first start is at 10 am and is a reverse start. Start times assigned based on boat rating, with slowest boats going first so that (in theory) everyone arrives at the finish around the same time.

Others wishing to cruise over to Port Ludlow and not worry about start times are encouraged to join the group for the BBQ and social gathering Saturday evening (see Mad Dash cruising page).

Please bring an appetizer or dessert to share for Saturday night. CYCE will provide burgers, condiments, and utensils.
